BECOMING THE CHURCH NEXT DOOR
Blessed are the Persecuted
Matthew 5:10-12
Are Jesus' words about persecution relevant in these days? Yes
- Global perspective.
- Biblical directive.
(2 Timothy 3:12 ~ “Indeed all who desire to live a Godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”)
The Reality of Persecution
What He does not say:
* Because we are obnoxious human beings.
* Because we are fanatics.
* Because we stand for a cause.
* For being good.
What He is saying:
* Because of your relationship with Jesus.
The Response of Persecution – “Rejoice and be glad.”
The Reward of the Persecution – “For your reward is great in heaven.”
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.” ~Jim Elliott
Application:
- Are we more often persecuted for the wrong reasons than the right reasons? (Discuss point 1 - The Reality of Persecution)
- Why does the name of Jesus invoke anger? (John 15:18-20)
- What is my life and witness like when the heat is on? What are our reactions to the pressures of life? Do we compromise and give in? Do we stand along? Do we face the battle?
- Am I salt and light to the community?
- Share a time when you were persecuted for righteousness sake?
