The Shame of Idolatry
Series Series in Jeremiah (2004-2007)
73
Aim: To be enthralled with Christ, so as to despise idols.
Doctrine: All false religion inevitably fails, despite years of ''security,'' because God is righteous.
Exegesis: Idolatry's warning signs: complacency—while squatting on God's ''territory'' (vv. 1-5); self-righteousness—hoping in works and riches (vv. 6-10); false trust in false peace (vv. 11-15).
Further application: How to counter creeping idolatry: first, recognize your flesh to be a ''god'' factory; then, go on the offensive with the gospel.
Key verse: v. 13 ''Moab shall be ashamed of Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of Bethel, their confidence.''
