Who Will Drink the Bitter Cup?

112

A review of Scripture shows that God has a cup of wrath ready for the wicked in this world. In the Tribulation there will be great judgment the world over, and masses of people will be judged and destroyed in God's wrath.

But we must remember that the cup of wrath is not just for those rotten people on the other side of the world, or those who are taking prayer out of our schools, or those who slay the innocent, or wagers of terrorism and war.

We are all subject to wrath because of our sin. None of us can escape wrath by our own efforts. Our best works are filthy before the holy and righteous God. We are all by nature children of wrath.

Praise God, He has determined to love and redeem His people from wrath! He has done so by preparing a substitute, His own dear Son, Who took the place of all His people at Calvary, and suffered that awful wrath in our place!

The fact is, there is a cup of wrath prepared for every single one of us. The question is only, who will drink that bitter cup?

Our Lord Jesus has drained that dark cup dry for His loved ones! In the garden, He clearly saw the horror of that wrath for our sin laid upon Him, and submitted Himself to drink it dry for us.

When they came to take Him away in judgment for our sins, Peter tried to stop Him. Christ's response was that He would not shirk the cup which His Father had given to him to drink.

Sure enough, on the cross, Jesus paid all the bitter price of justice in our place.

"Death and the curse were in our cup,
O Christ twas full for Thee!
But Thou hast drained the last dark drop,
'Tis empty now for me!
That bitter cup, love drank it up!
Left naught but love for me!"
