How Faith Works

What does the Biblical writer mean when he defines faith as "the substance of things hoped for" and "the evidence of things not seen"? Why does faith work?

Too often, believers have an academic understanding of faith, instead of a faith that transports spiritual realities into our realm and lives. To them, faith is a subjective feeling - not that which has a real bearing on the objective realities of their lives.
