The Davidic Covenant #2

97

The time came when the children of Israel asked God to give them a king. In so doing they were rejecting God Himself, for God wanted to be their only King. Nevertheless God mercifully granted their request and gave them a king. Yet in doing so God did a curious thing. He had prophesied 1,000 years earlier through the mouth of his servant Jacob that the scepter would never depart from Judah, but God chose Saul the son of Kish of the tribe of Benjamin to serve as king. What was the Lord doing? From our text we learn that God's ultimate eternal purposes cannot always be discerned by the Providences immediately in front of us. And we are reminded that Jesus Christ ALONE is the Head and King of His church.
