The Commandment Forbidding Adultery
Series Heidelberg Catechism
Among sins, sexual sins are the most powerful and destructive. They lead away unawares to the destruction of hell. As an ox to the slaughter, as a bird in the snare, till a dart strike through the heart.
The basis for this commandment is the institution of marriage. Jesus' teaching on marriage takes us back to the beginning. Marriage is a permanent bond between one man and one woman for life.
The commandment forbids not only adultery and fornication, but all the things that tend toward these, including gestures, thoughts and dress.
The sin against this commandment is extremely destructive, to persons, minds, homes, societies, and souls.
There is forgiveness and hope for those who have broken it, and the possibility of putting this sin away -- in Christ.
