Left-Handed But Not Limited

193

Left-Handed: Limited, but not left-out in the Service of God.

Judges 20:16 "Among all this people there were seven hundred chosen men lefthanded; every one could sling stones at an hair breadth, and not miss."

I noticed that yesterday (Aug 13th) was deemed International Left Handed Day. Although I am not left-handed, that designation made me think of the verse, posted above, in the Book of Judges.

For some reason, it appears that the tribe of Benjamin produced a remarkable number of left-handed men.

In Judges 3:15 we are told of one man, named Ehud, who God raised up to deliver His people. Ehud killed the Moabite king of Eglon. The description of Ehud in that passage simply says, "he was a man lefthanded".

It is interesting to note the simplicity of that statement in the Hebrew text: "He was shut of his right hand".
So his left-handedness is mentioned as an impediment or a some sort of physical deficiency. I would image that left-handed people living in a right-handed world would be able to related to this description. Additionally, in light of the reference in Judges 20:16, it seems that in the military especially, being left-handed was seen as an impediment to service.

So the main points are Ehud's right hand was weak but he made up for his deficiency by developing the skill of his other hand.

What lessons can we draw from these descriptions of these men of God in the Book of Judges?
I think it is this: That we should not allow our natural limitations to prevent us from being of service to God.
