The Eyes of Your Heart

Paul has moved from praising God (1:3-14) to petitioning God (1:15-23). He listed five petitions, which illustrate the ongoing content of the apostle's prayers. His second petition is the concern of this message. I take the object of the first two petitions to be "him" at the end of verse seventeen, "our Lord Jesus Christ". The word "understanding", in the original, is καρδια, heart. He used a unique metaphor, "eyes of your heart", making it intensely personal.
