The Lord Jesus shed his blood not only to wash away our sins but the wash away the sinful element in our "good" works. We sometimes fail to realize that our good works only become good by faith: "The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD" (Proverbs 15:8).
God accepted Abel's sacrifice because Abel was a believer; he rejected Cain's sacrifice because Cain was a child of the devil.
