Paul before Felix

19

Paul used his position as a defendant to tell Felix the message of Christ. He referred to it as the accepted Jewish religion, especially concerning the resurrection of the dead. Luke refers to it as 'the faith in Christ' (verse 22). That includes the doctrine of Person of Christ including the reason for his incarnation. It includes faith in him as the God-given Saviour of sinners, including the hope of the resurrection. 'Righteousness' includes integrity, our record before God, and justification and sanctification through Christ. 'Self-control' is part of what distinguished humanity from the animal kingdom at creation - we lost that at the Fall. Felix' private life showed little self-control. It is part of the work of the Spirit when he renews a person. 'Judgement to come' would have sounded frightening to Felix, but the faith of Jesus Christ shows judgement already done at Calvary and vindication for every believer through Jesus' resurrection and at the great day.
