Chosen in Christ
Series Ephesians
To understand a believer's relationship with God we need to see it from his perspective. If you are in Christ it is because he has 'chosen' you. He did not do so because of your qualities for he did it before the foundation of the world, as a matter of grace, and in order to make you what you should be. That involves being 'holy', ie one of God's people called out of society. He will so change your character and conduct that you will become 'blameless' (note - 'spirits of just men made perfect'). And he has made you his child. That is your identity; it gives a sense of belonging; and it shows his tender love. In turn, you will show the honour of his name and endure the reproaches cast at him (for which he will then honour you). You can approach him as your Father, and appeal on that basis (which you could not do before). Such adoption is unique, for in human society the relationship with the new parents comes before the relationship with their natural children; in this case your union with his Son Christ Jesus brings you into the Father's family. This is all to his praise. If we do not praise him for it that suggests we are still hostile at heart. Learn about his grace so that you may be able to say, 'Blessed be God'.
