The Proud vs. the Prophet
Series Series in Jeremiah (2004-2007)
Aim: To side with God and His servants—resisting temptations to disobey the Lord.
Doctrine: Our entire welfare depends on whom it is we listen to (and follow). The arrogance of our fallen hearts favors God's enemies; the humility of our renewed souls defers to God's friends.
Exegesis: The motives and destinations that drive the proud and the prophet: unbelief sends the proud to Hell (Egypt) (vv. 1-7); faithfulness causes the prophet to continue to do God's work (vv. 8-11); hope encourages the believer to anticipate Christ's triumphs (vv. 12-13).
Further application: How to know if I am with the proud or the prophet: do I sincerely seek God? Do I live by faith, and not by sight?
Key phrases: vv. 2b, 8a '''You speak falsely! The LORD our God has not sent you'...Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah in Tahpanhes...''
