The White-Washed Tombs of Sardis

The other day I found a wonderful looking cantaloupe in the garden. It smelled and appeared like it was going to be a delightful breakfast, but when I cut it open I was instantly repulsed by the reality of a rotten core. The surface presentation was only hiding its true essence. The church in Sardis enjoyed a reputation of spiritual vitality, but Christ sees through the exterior and declares that the profession of the church is ringing with a rotten hollowness. The congregation has fallen asleep, with only a few members excepted, and is walking in a hypocritical stupor. Christ commands them to repentant watchfulness, to return to the gospel that was first delivered to them, and to hold fast until He comes. The overcomers are promised heavenly, undefiled robes and the unceasing advocacy of Christ Himself.
