Back in chapter 3 Job had cursed the day of his birth, and lamented that he had ever been conceived. Indeed, Job had said, “let those curse it who curse the day, who are ready to rouse up Leviathan.” (3:8)
Leviathan was the name of ancient sea monster, who in ancient mythologies was supposed to have fought against the gods. By invoking Leviathan, Job was saying, in effect, if only someone could raise up Leviathan – perhaps Leviathan could go back in time and blot out the night of my conception!
Now God comes and reminds him of this: You wanted to rouse Leviathan? How's that going for you? I, on the other hand, I made Leviathan. Leviathan frolics in my kiddy pool....
