Equipped For Every Good Work
Series Growth in Grace
Equipped For Every Good Work (Acts 18:24-28)
Intro: Apollos
"I planted & Apollos watered, but God made it grow" (1Cor 3:6).
Although he had natural advantages & knew the Scriptures, he "had been instructed in the way of the Lord."
"catecheo: to teach in a systematic or detailed manner" (Luow-Nida, 33.225).
- Training he received: Apollos had been catechized in way of the Lord (v25)
Objection: Isn't catechizing a Roman Catholic thing? Only in response to success of Protestants. Trent declared, "The heretics have chiefly made use of catechisms to corrupt the minds of Christians."
Objection: "We must let God speak for himself.. It means to accept his word, the Bible, as the truth. Our appeal is to the Bible for truth" (Let God Be True, Watchtower Publications).
(Matthew Henry's 3 purposes of Biblical catechism to teach the Word of God)
Effect on the man: Fervent in spirit, spoke & taught accurately the things of the Lord (v26)
See Eph 4:14, 2Tim 2:15Effect on his brethren: Greatly helped those who had believed (v27)
Taught things of God accurately; helped believers defend faithEffect on his enemies: Vigorously refuted them publicly, showing from Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ (v28)
See 1Tim 4:16, 2Pet 1:1-2
