The Faith of Washington

The founders of our nation made us a nation of laws, governed by a Constitution that stood above men. They knew that power was a dangerous thing, so they divided it among the three branches of government in order to check the sinful inclination to abuse it. But today, we face an America in which the executive branch runs roughshod over the other branches, often with disastrous consequences for freedom and representative government—and it has even put lives in danger. And too often, Christians have stood by and let it happen. That’s not the way it’s supposed to be. Our nation's first president, George Washington, driven by his Christian faith, provides a model for the servant-leader who shuns power and leaves it to the people's representatives.
