Dealing with Discouragement

When Jesus began to tell His disciples about His impending death, their hopes came crashing down into discouragement. In response Jesus gave them a promise and eight days later the fulfillment came at the Mount of Transfiguration. How did Jesus' transfiguation encourage them? What encouragement is there for us in this event?
