Divorce According to Jesus
Series The Sermon on the Mount
Jesus taught clearly that full divorce, with the possibility of remarriage, is permitted in case of sexual immorality. Moses taught that it is also permitted in case of failure to provide, and Paul taught that a third ground for divorce is irremediable desertion.
Without sexual immorality or one of the other Biblical grounds, however, divorce is impermissible. It may remove your civil obligation to remain married, but it cannot remove your moral obligation to remain married. Therefore, though marriage is not indissoluble, those vows are binding! Divorce is the outcome of lust, and it is the temporal analogue to eternal hellfire. But it is not unforgivable, as adultery is not unforgivable. If you're wrongly divorced, repent from where you are. Know that Jesus' blood covers your sin too, if you only ask His forgiveness and His strength to do the right thing from whatever corner you've sinned yourself into.
