Renewing Our Covenantal Vows at the Lord's Supper

The Sacrament of the Lord’s Supper is a solemn occasion for the renewal of our covenantal vows with the Savior.

What do we see represented in this Sacrament?

1. In the Bread, His body broken.

2. In the Wine, His blood poured out. Taken together, we see His death portrayed.

3. We see Him, partaking with us, giving Himself, in the duties of the Minister.

4. We see ourselves, His congregation, the Bride, as a representative part of the Church universal. We are not passive spectators, but worshipping participants.

5. In actions of eating and drinking, we should understand what it means to “believe,” “trust,” “adhere,” live “in Christ.” (John 7:37,38)

6. We see represented communion in, and fellowship with, Christ Himself. In the Old Covenant dispensation, the Peace, or Fellowship Offering, served a different purpose than the Burnt Offering or the Sin Offering. (1 Corinthians 12:13)

7. In the Lord’s Supper we see the vision of the age to come in representative form. We see a Feast Spread. (1 Cor. 5:8; Luke 13:15; 22:30; Mt. 26:29)

Application:

1. How greatly we should value this sacrament.

2. What care we should take to prepare for it.

3. How grateful we should be for membership in the Church.

4. How we should long for the enabling grace Christ imparts.

We renew our covenant with our Savior. The Father says in words that we can see, taste, smell, and feel, “Look, I still offer you My Son.” We respond, “Yes, we still need Him and desire Him.”
