61 Doing God's Will

Why are you following Jesus Christ? What are your intentions? Jesus in Gethsemane has brought us to the crux of life - "Not my will but thine be done." This passage looks at three individuals - Judas, Peter, and one unnamed (possibly Mark himself, or a grounds keeper) and it probes their intentions to help us examine our own. Vs. 43-46 we see Judas leading the temple leaders to where he knows Jesus will be - Why? Jesus has disappointed him, Jesus isn't who he wanted him to be, he is not going to get rich on Jesus coat tails so he settles for 30 pieces of silver. Judas has evil intentions. In vs. 47-50 Peter steps in to defend Jesus by attacking one of those who have come to arrest Jesus. Does God need us to defend Him? Obviously not and by trying to defend Jesus Peter was actually setting himself against God's plan. Peter had misplaced intentions.
The third unnamed person is at least superficially drawn to Jesus as he follows him to the "garden" but when the guards lay hands on him he shrugs out of his garment and runs away naked. He had casual intentions so when the going got rough he got going.
Do you want to be like these men - and "waste [your] life in chains of sin... live a lukewarm life, just a passing whim?" Do "wanna live the casual Christian life" (DeGarmo & Key). We need to know this that without a doubt in spite of all mans intentions, nothing could or can stop God from carrying out HIS plans.
