Loved Before We Even Existed

When the Psalmist pleads with God not to forget him in his old age, he remembers how God's power and protection were with him from before his birth.

Birth is a miraculous event, though it is so common that we hardly think of it that way. The biologists and doctors still cannot plumb the depths of the miracle of conception, and embryotic development, and the forming of the baby in the womb, much less the impossibility of live birth.

It all happens microscopically, and internally, and secretly, yet God's power is on display in every birth, particularly since God loved His people before we even existed!

He loved us, He made us deliberately, He kept us safe, He brought us forth alive to know Him and to be saved forever by Him!

The declaration of God's power in birth found in Psalm 71:6-8 jumped out at the preacher when he remembered the miraculous birth of a friend we have prayed for these past years. Her family has been under satanic attack by courts and judges and lawyers and ex-inlaws, her children put in danger, her health broken by the stress of it all.

Yet over twenty years ago, she experienced a true miracle in the birth of her second son. The doctors diagnosed him with multiple birth defects, and urged her to abort her son.

But she cried out to God in fervent prayer, and overnight, God healed her baby boy, and he went on to be born perfectly healthy and strong.

Indeed, God protected him, and took him from her womb alive, and he remains an astonishment to those who know him and love him, like the Psalmist recalled.

When we're in trouble, we ought to remember the power that God has already displayed in our birth, loving us before we were born!
