Private Interpretation

Systematic Theology - Lesson 124 - Hermeneutics: Personal Bible Study and Private Interpretation. The Bible, as revelation, is God's self-disclosure of Himself to us. To rightly interpret revelation we do the work of exegesis objectively while relying on the illuminating power of the Holy Spirit. Subjectivism and pragmatism lead to eisegesis wherein we read into the text a meaning instead of pulling the meaning out from the text. A major victory for Bible study and understanding was won during the time of the Reformation with the introduction of Scripture in the common languages of people, allowing private interpretation as opposed to the Roman Catholic Church declaring what the text meant. Today we can study the Scriptures for ourselves!
