Believers are to have the same love for each other. In this passage, Paul's joy was tied to his concern for the unity of believers.

When it comes to being of one purpose, this is where modern day Christianity can break down. In the day when it has become politically correct to be inclusive, to be united in purpose, doctrine and biblical teaching must be proclaimed in a dark world because the truth must be heard.
