Sovereign Love for Naaman
139 ( 89 | 50 )
Leprosy is a picture of sin. Leprosy could not be cured by man. The same can be said of sin. Only God can cure from the pollution and power of sin. Naaman was a leper who came out of darkness to became a believer in the true God.
- Naaman was an object of the God's sovereign love
(1a) The sovereignty of God is seen in his position of power
- God's sovereignty was ruling in Naaman's life long before he came to Elisha
- God directed so Naaman became commander of the Syrian army.
(1b) The sovereignty of God is seen in his perilous state - Naaman was not a leper by accident
- Without his leprosy, he would have never met Elisha
- God uses extreme measures to humble us
(1c) The sovereignty of God is seen in the people in his life - he had a maid from Israel and a maid from the believing remnant
- In the fullness of time, God brought the right girl at the right time to save a pagan army soldier
- none of us deserve to know the sovereign love of God
- Naaman was obedient to the commandment of God
(2a) He had to receive the word of a servant
- Elisha did not speak to Naaman
- Instead God sent a servant of Elisha to speak to Naaman
- Part of God's humbling is that we accept the word of a humble messenger who brings the word of God
(2b) He had to review his notion of God and religion - Behold I thought...
- God's thoughts are not our thoughts
- He had his notions of religion
- He thought God had to work in a dramatic fashion
(2c) He had to reject the pride of his national culture
(2d) He had to realize he could not earn his salvation
- Naaman was transformed by the power of God
(3a) a public confession
(3b) a commitment
(3c) a conscience
