Singing salvation

Mary, directed by Gabriel, makes haste to visit her pregnant relative, Elizabeth. Their meeting prompts an outburst of joy and praise.

There is, first, a bouncing baby - John’s first pulpit was his mother’s womb and his first sermon was a kick.

There is, next, a blessing woman, as Elizabeth humbly and thankfully testifies of God’s goodness to Mary and to her in so favouring them.

There is, finally, a believing maiden, as Mary pours out her soul to God in grateful praise, testifying of his distinctive mercy, his surprising pattern, and his grand purpose.

Once again, faith is at the forefront of Luke’s narrative: do we believe and respond in the same way as these women of God?
