Mordecai draws a line right there. And because of his loyalty to his God, the wrath of Haman is directed against Mordecai and more. Now you see there are times in life, there are moments in life, where the wisdom we exercise in our interactions with people day by day has to be put to one side, because there is a claim upon us, a claim upon our allegiance that requires us to take a stand of one kind or another. It was this kind of claim upon their allegiance that the early Christians had to face when the Roman soldiers would come to their town or village and they would pass ’round some offering material and they were told to take some grains of this and to throw it on the fire before the image of Caesar. It was projected as if this was simply a political action, a political act of obeisance before Caesar. And Jesus’ people couldn’t do it. And when they tried to introduce the Mass into the churches in Scotland the Covenanters couldn’t do it, because it required them bowing down to something. It required them making obeisance to something that was not God. And today there are challenges that come across our path. ‘Will I speak out, will I stand up or not? Will I speak out for some aspect of who God is or what God has done. Or will I stay silent?’ It might be safer to stay silent.
