Regaining Reverence
24
Leviticus 16 is a chapter that sets before us The Day of Atonement. Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown ( the three wise men) say in their commentary, "The whole arraignment was designed to inspire reverence". Forget not that no one is naturally reverent. Acts 27:9 calls this day "the fast". Most of the Jews understood Leviticus 16:29, "afflict your souls", to mean fast. Not that there is merit in fasting, but your attitude is your responsability. We of course are not obligated to keep a day of atonement with all the Old testament ceremonies. However, God talks about reverence for atonement and forgiveness of sins in the most solemn tones. We need this reverence today. We are seriously incomplete believers without this mentality.
