The Triunity of God Pt 3

165

Q6. How many Persons are there in the Godhead?
A6. There are three Persons in the Godhead, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one God, the same in essence, equal in power and glory.

1 John 5:7 is controversial. Zondervan's NIV, 1 John 5:7-8 reads, "For there are three that testify: 8 the Spirit, the water and the blood; and the three are in agreement." The footnote Zondervan contains for this says: "Late manuscripts of the Vulgate testify in heaven: the Father, the Word and the Holy Spirit, and these three are one. 8And there are three that testify on earth: the (not found in any Greek manuscript before the sixteenth century)."

Cyprian (d. c.258) – "He who breaks the peace and the concord of Christ, does so in opposition to Christ; he who gathereth elsewhere than in the Church, scatters the Church of Christ. The Lord says, 'I and the Father are one;' and again it is written of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, 'And these three are one.'"

Athanasius of Alexandria (c.293-373) – It would seem that He could have mentioned it if it were available, because it would have ended all controversy had he just quoted it. (John Gill said the Athanasius had quoted 1 John 5:7, but it's not in any writings of his that we currently have).

The footnote I have made in A Puritan Catechism presents 3 Scripture proofs that ascribe the supernatural work of the resurrection to each Person of deity:

Father - Ephesians 1:17-20
Son - John 2:19
Holy Spirit - Romans 8:11
