For Better of For Worse

51

Jesus is working the biblical worldview into His disciples as He teaches them humility, trains them to serve one another, and put themselves last rather than being served and putting themselves first (Mark 9:33-37). The disciples still had some selfishness and pride in them and were discussing among themselves who would be the greatest. Jesus corrects their vision. He further warns them about the dangers or seriousness of sin in their lives. He refers to the influence that each person has over children or new believers. He also spoke about the need to deal severely with sin in their own lives. He called for the immediate severing of sinful activity from their lives—things they do with their hands, places their feet take them, or things they allow their eyes to see. In the last two chapters, we are called to discipleship that is filled with sacrificial love and service and the disciples dealing with sin.
These truths will bleed over into this next section of Scripture which teaches about marriage and divorce. Marriage is designed by God who is good, sovereign, wise, holy, and faithful. In our culture today, biblical marriage is under attack on every side. Jesus has been teaching, and the question of divorce comes up. There have been several times that I have been asked about this subject. Let’s hear from the One who knows how to best answer this question—Our Creator. God knows how He has designed the roles and relationships among humanity to work. Today, we will not be able to cover a comprehensive view on this subject, but we will look at some general principles about this vital subject of marriage and family.
