Spurgeon was clear. The gospel is to be preached freely to all – to sinners as sinners. Gospel invitations and commands are to be issued to all – to sinners as sinners. Examples of him doing this in sermon after sermon – as well as stating the case expressly – are legion. He had no truck with those who limit gospel invitations and commands to certain ‘characters’; that is, those they call ‘sensible sinners’:
