Christ is Our Approachable King

It is an astonishment that our Lord Jesus, the Creator of all things, was so sorely abused during His first advent. This is so contrary to the ways in which our great men and our rulers demand to be treated.

But His willingness to suffer such abuse is companion to His meekness and lowliness of heart in dealing with sinners, and in embracing His loved ones. Our modern rulers may fake being "men of the people," but the Lord Jesus' mercy and compassion is beyond measure.

Zechariah 9:9 describes Him as a great king Who rides a lowly colt. Though great, He has not a particle of pride or arrogance about Him.

Christ's description of Himself, as meek and lowly of heart, goes along with the lightened burden and easy yoke He offers to repentant sinners who come to Him. He offers rest to sinners weary with the burden of the law which they cannot keep. Though entitled, our Lord Jesus doesn't "lord it over" His people with an oppressive hand.

The reason the burden He offers is light, is because He has shifted it onto Himself. All our sin, all our guilt, all the law we could not keep, our Savior has carried that load away for us!

By the New Covenant, He has changed our minds and our hearts also. Now we are created new men, and God's law can become our delight.

What a blessing - Jesus has taken away by His death and by His lowly and meek attitude the fear a sinner should have in coming to Him. How amazing that the Holy God has found a way, in the incarnation, to approach sinners with such compassion and such grace!

Oh that Believers would gladly be subject to the One who is so easy to be subject to! Truly, there's not a friend like the lowly Jesus!
