Calvin: “Unless we fully believe this (i.e. God’s sovereignty) the very beginning of our faith is periled, by which we profess to believe in God Almighty.”

I. It all starts with God – Gen. 1:1

II. We can know some things about this Great God

A. We can know some things by Observation.

B. How do we really know anything about God with
certainty?

   “The Scriptures principally teach – what man
   is to believe concerning God and what duty
   God requires of man.” Baptist Catechism #6

III. We can know some things about God Himself
Gregory Nazianzus (4th century): “It is very
shameful, and not only shameful, but very
foolish, to take from things below and guess at
things above, and from a fluctuating nature at
the things that are unchanging.”

 Baptist Catechism #7 – Who is God?
   “God is a Spirit, infinite, eternal and
   unchangeable in His being, wisdom, power,
   holiness, justice, goodness and truth.

A. God is Spirit

B. God is Self-Sufficient

C. God is Omniscient – All knowing as the source
of All

D. God is Omnipresent – there is nowhere where He
is not

   What about Jesus? – Baptist Catechism #24
   “The only redeemer of God’s elect is the Lord
   Jesus Christ, who being the eternal son of
   God, became man, and so was and continues to
   be God and man in two distinct natures, and
   one person forever.”

E. God is Omnipotent – all powerful
