The Lord Proclaimed His Name
Series Exposition of Exodus
God commanded Moses to cut to tablets of stone, so He would write on them what He had written on the ones that Moses broke. He was to meet God on Mt. Sinai in the morning. He was also to make sure that no people or animals came close to the mountain. Moses cut the tablets and went up the mountain early in the morning. God descended in a cloud, passed before him and proclaimed the name of the Lord. The name He proclaims here is not as simple as I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. It still testified to the compassion and mercy of God towards thousands, but also that He would be no means clear the guilty and that the iniquity of the fathers would by upon the third and fourth generations. Moses responded by bowing down before God and worshiping Him. Moses again appealed to God to go with them even as they were a stiff-necked people and to take them as His inheritance. He was appealing for the type to be the antitype. God's people were always planned to be the church, because the true church is not made up of stiff-necked people.
