Back to the Basics
Series The Book of Joshua
In our walk with God, it is good to return to the basics and be reminded of who we are and what God has done. This is what we have in the fifth chapter of Joshua.
In this passage, three main events are presented
The procedure (Joshua 5:2-3)
The procedure was circumcision. It was a sign: the people belonged to God and they were marked for blessing (Genesis 17:11). It had a spiritual meaning: moral renewal and the new birthThe passover (Joshua 5:10)
Its purpose was to remember (Ex 12:24, 27). It was a celebration for a redeemed community (Ex 12: 43-44).The provision (Joshua 5:12)
They ate of old corn of the land. Ordinary provision is an evidence of God's care. Look for the miraculous and you may forget the wonder of the ordinary.
In these events, God's people are being reminded:
Reminded of their identity
They are the Lord's people by election. They are His by redemption (a blood bought people). The giants cannot overcome us.Reminded of their community
The people of God came together to partake of the passover. We are not fighting battles alone. We are a company of God's people. Israel defeated giants together.Reminded of their responsibility
They are reminded to walk by faith. Those who came out of Egypt had the sign but no substance. You might think you stand but take head that you do not fall.Reminded of their opportunity
God says: Walk with me and I will take care of you. Far too often, the people of God look too far down the line. Do what is right and leave the consequences with God. Our opportunity is to walk with God and watch him take care of us. Our encouragement is that the God of heaven is our God.
