Darkness & Light 2; The New Man

114

Leo Tolstoy wrote: 'Everyone thinks of changing the world, but no one thinks of changing himself.' Or, there are no shortages of opinions about what is wrong with the world and others, only a shortage of
energy and desire to change ourselves for good. Yet, change is happening
whether we want to acknowledge that or not. And the 'default' setting is
not good.

The way of change that finds itself in accord with God's intention
for us lies in the truths found in Scripture. There is no other source
of truth in a world that is fallen. Those that choose to remain
ignorant of the truth (and it is a choice), find themselves in darkness,
boasting of and relying in themselves. One writer put it this way: 'Those
who never retract their opinions love themselves more than they love
truth.'
Verse 21 of our passage informs is of the source of truth, '...just
as truth is in Jesus.'
In another place, Jesus makes His own claim to be the sole source
of truth; 'I am the way, and the Truth and the life; no one comes to the
Father, but through Me' (Jn. 14:6). Simple yet provocative. We seek Christ as the single source for change according to the truth found in Him
and we find Him in His living Word (Jn. 1:14; Heb. 4:12).
The Bible gives us the reason for change (the Father); the model for change (the Son); and the power for change (the Holy Spirit). This is
lasting change in the right direction indeed.
