The Problem of Today's American Church

This address was given by Dr. Paul M. Elliott to a meeting of the American Council of Christian Churches on April 28, 2014. Excerpts:

"We find, named for us in Acts chapter 4...the members of an unholy alliance against the truth. It was an alliance that is composed of the religious conservatives of the day, as well as the religious liberals of the day. It was an alliance that extended into, and was supported by, the power of the civil government of the day....religious leaders in partnership with civil authority entering into an unholy alliance against the truth.

"Now you may be wondering, how does this relate to the situation in our own day? What is the parallel? Let me submit this to you: I believe that the situation that is developing within the American church scene, and even within the purportedly conservative American church scene, could well lead to this kind of an alliance....
