Upon returning to Jerusalem from Damascus, Saul experienced considerable difficulty gaining acceptance by the brethren. Why? Because his reputation for being a persecutor of Christians preceded him and the disciples in Jerusalem were afraid. Enter Barnabas, 'son of encouragement' whose stellar reputation among the people paved the way for the beginning of Saul's ministry in Jerusalem.
