In Romans 4:9-12 Paul describes four realities that answer the question, "Is the blessing of imputed righteousness available for Jews only, or is it also available for Gentiles?" (v. 9). Reality 1: Remember my premise - Abraham's faith was counted to him as righteousness (v. 9b). Reality 2: Remember the order - This righteousness was counted to him prior to his circumcision (v. 10). Reality 3: Remember the reason - His circumcision was actually a sign and seal of the righteousness he already had by faith (v. 11a). Reality 4: Consider the purposes of God's work - Abraham would be the father of all the Gentiles who believe (so righteousness would be counted to them - v. 11b); and Abraham would be the father of all the Jews who believe (as evidenced by their daily walk of faith - v. 12).
