Summary of Systematic Theology: The Trinity Part 1

64

Today we start our overview of the doctrine of the Trinity of God. The doctrine of the Trinity is a fundamental, cardinal, doctrine of Christianity, and at the same time, is the most difficult to comprehend. Summarily stated, the doctrine of the Trinity is that the only one, true God subsists in three distinct persons, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, and the three are fully God. There are three persons of one substance, power and eternity that exist as one, as a singular plurality. The Father is not begotten, the Son is eternally begotten, and the Holy Spirit proceeds from both. The Bible ascribes the same attributes to all three persons of the Godhead, equally. There is one divine essence with one will, intellect and affections, but three distinct persons who subsist and coalesce in the unique divine essence eternally.
