Shepherding at Home

289 ( 254 | 35 )

As Father’s Day approaches, the spotlight turns to dads everywhere. But being a father is about far more than sharing genetics. True fatherhood involves knowing, leading, providing, and protecting.

Recent statistics show that the two-parent, husband-wife family unit is now in the minority in the United States. “There is a crisis in the family,” says Tim Witmer, author of The Shepherd Leader at Home. “Many of the problems in the church, and in society at large, for that matter, can be traced to growing numbers of families that are like sheep without a shepherd.”

In The Shepherd Leader at Home, Witmer takes the Bible’s shepherd metaphor and applies it to the role of husband and father. Using the outline of the four categories above – knowing, leading, providing and protecting – Witmer challenges men to cultivate intentional leadership within their marriage and parenting.

“No relationship is static,” Witmer explains. “You are either committed to growing closer or you are drifting apart.” In this book, men will find practical tips to help them grow closer to their families. They’ll also learn the importance of building authentic communication and cultivating healthy family goals.

On the program today my guest will be Tim Witmer - professor of practical theology and coordinator of the practical theology department at Westminster Theological Seminary. He has served as senior minister of Crossroads Community Church since 1986 and is the author of The Shepherd Leader: Achieving Effective Shepherding in Your Church
