Hope
A Sermon delivered on Lord's Day Afternoon, June 1, 2008, by Phil Cavin at Glencullen Baptist Church, Portland, Oregon

19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek. ~ Hebrews 6:19-20

Introduction: The opposite of hope is despair…
I. The Nature of Christian Hope…
A. The object is always and really good…
Psalm 16:11; 23:6

B. The object of hope is always future good…
C. The object of hope must be attainable…
“For God will withhold no good thing from them that walk uprightly…”

II. The Character of Christian Hope…
“…an anchor of the soul…”
A. It secures in time of storm and danger…Job 19:25 cf. 2 Timothy 1:12
B. It needs a proper connecting line…
Hope depends upon real faith…
C. It must be engaged…
We must about in hope, and hope to the end, cf. Hebrews 3:6; 6:11; 1 Peter 1:13.
D. It must rest on solid ground…

III. The Importance of Christian Hope…
Do you remember hopelessness? There is the tragedy of having no hope. Ephesians 2:12-13
A. To our character, 1 Peter 1:3
B. To our labors, Galatians 6:9
C. To our peace, happiness and contentment, Lamentations 3:24
“The thoughts of such amazing bliss
should constant joys create…”

IV. The Certainty of Christian Hope…
“…Sure and Steadfast…”

The Christian’s hope cannot fail because…
A. God’s truth cannot fail, James 1:17; Hebrews 6:18
B. Christ’s blood cannot fail, Hebrews 5:9
C. Christ’s intercession in Heaven cannot fail, Isaiah 53:11; Hebrews 1:1-13.
