The Jewish people had so corrupted the regulations of their faith that they managed to convince themselves that salvation would come from keeping the Law of God.
Nothing could be further from the truth, but you would have a hard time convincing a legalist that he is trying to do something to earn his own salvation.
They had long ago fallen into false doctrine and they fell in love with false teachers because they had itching ears and only wanted to hear what pleased them.
Jeremiah 5:30–31
One of the distinctives of a poor person is they understand their property.
They come to realize there are limitations in their life on what they can and cannot do, what they can and cannot have, or own.

A person who recognizes their own spiritual poverty their own bankruptness, that person recognizes their need to come to God based upon his standard.
But they are given eyes to see that they cannot purchase heaven, or forgiveness or eternal life.
The person who see's that they are spiritually bankrupt, knows that they cannot pay God off or bribe him with works.

In our culture we do not seek God based upon his standard but we seek God based on our own wants and pleasures.

We no longer care for a God that preaches repentance. Note we no longer care for a God who demands obedience. men and women will love a God who is benevolent and sweet and kind and giving.
