After the ominous warning of the "man of lawlessness", Paul now encourages the Thessalonians to recognize that since they are held firm by God--via election--they can stand firm in Him and His promises. The Father has chosen His people from the beginning for salvation through sanctification by the Spirit to obtain the glory of the Son. So they may and should stand firm, comforted in their hearts and established in every good work and word.
