07-The Preacher Must Be Aware of his Hearers

In other words, the preacher must make sure his hearers are
engaged with him, and he with them, in what he is saying –
engaged with the mind, in the first place; but not merely with
the mind. Surely this is obvious, isn’t it? But how few really
engage with their hearers? I have already spoken of a
slumbering congregation under a slumbering preacher. We
shall never engage with people if we or they are semi-
comatose. Preachers must know – they must feel – how their
hearers are reacting, and respond accordingly.
