Casting Jonah into the Sea

Why did the storm not cease after Jonah confessed his sin? Verse 15 of Chapter 1 of Jonah tells us that the storm ceased only after Jonah was cast in to the sea. What does that casting in to the sea represent? I will look at the verse on the program today.
