As Many As

Jesus made a simple statement declaring God's sovereign grace. Having eternal life is not by a deed or decision. Jesus didn't provide an opportunity or give an invitation. It's easy to see eternal life comes by God's election and predestination, Christ's definite redemption and the Spirit's efficacious call. The little phrase -as many as- identifies who the Father gave Him and for whom He came. He gives them eternal life and withholds it from the rest.
