The question the rich young ruler asks Jesus is a question that many are asking today: 'What must I do to have eternal life?' And the manner by which the this young man was striving to obtain eternal life is the same method many take today--striving to be a good person, law-keeping. But Jesus makes clear to the rich young ruler that law-keeping is not the means of eternal life or of being in a relationship with Christ.
