Galatians 6:6

Greg Nichols

  1. The specified giver – “Let him that is taught in the Word share”
  2. The specified receiver – “with him who teaches”
  3. The specified gifts – “in all good things.”

I believe the text presupposes at least 5 things:

  1. There are people in the congregation who are being taught.
  2. These people are being taught in the context of a local church.
  3. These people have a relationship with their pastor/teachers.
  4. These people have a Biblical obligation to their pastor(s).
  5. “Good things” is not limited only to money.

I. Historical Background
The First London Baptist Confession realized this danger.

 1646 edition – Chapter 38:
“The ministers of Christ ought to have whatsoever they shall need, supplied
freely by the church, that according to Christ’s ordinance they that preach the
Gospel should live of the gospel.”

 2 LBCF – 26:10

II. Sowing and Reaping – Gal. 6:7
See 2 Cor. 9:6-10

III. Pastoral Support in 1 Timothy 5:17-18

 A. Exegesis

      1. The persons referenced – the elders who rule well.
      2. The reward – be counted worthy of double honor.
      3. An inference – double honor limits the salary of a Pastor.

 B. The Description of a False Teacher – 1 Tim. 6:3-11

      1. He is not governed by the Word of God
      2. He is proud
      3. He does not major on the foundational truths of Christianity
      4. He believes that worldly success proves his spirituality
      5. He ministers for money – so he cannot be a faithful minister
