The Purpose of God's Law

To have a proper understanding of the moral law we must view the 4 facets below as a unit. These 4 facets together constitute the purpose of God's Law – failing to view them as unit will lead to a distorted view of the 10 Commandments.

I. THE LAW REVEALS OUR SIN & GOD'S HOLINESS
Rom. 3:20 … through the law comes knowledge of sin. 7:12 Therefore the law is holy, & the commandment holy & just & good.

II. THE LAW REVEALS OUR INABILITY
Rom. 7:14... the law is spiritual, but I am of the flesh, sold under sin.

III. THE LAW LEADS US TO JESUS CHRIST
Gal. 3:24 Therefore the law was our tutor to bring us to Christ…

IV. THE LAW GIVES US A STANDARD TO LIVE BY
Romans 8:3-4 & Matthew 5:19
