11 - Spurgeon and God's Desire to Save Sinners

Why a chapter devoted to Spurgeon? For two reasons. First, Spurgeon was a fine example of a free-offer preacher. I have already shown that he preached duty faith; now I will demonstrate that he preached God’s desire to save all sinners. Secondly, as I have already noted, Ella criticised a small book-review I wrote, in which I expressed my views on the paradox between God’s decree to save his elect and his desire to save all sinners. Referring to the review, Ella accused me of having ‘the audacity to thrust forward Charles H.Spurgeon, citing him as one who believed that the testimony of Scripture is irreconcilable with itself’.
